If you were a past candidate and wish to share your experience after your Adelante internship, please feel free to contact us and share your story!
We received an email last week from a past candidate who joined our EMT internship program back in 2001. It’s always a pleasure to hear from our alumni and learn how taking an internship with Adelante has impacted a candidate’s career.
Dear Adelante,
I decided to do a random internet search on Adelante to see how far the company has come since I participated in my Adelante internship ~16 years ago. After my graduation from Duke University in 2001 with a degree in History and Spanish, Adelante offered me the opportunity to pursue an internship as an EMT in Spain. This seemed like a perfect fit for me as I was applying to medical schools upon graduation. I not only got to spend time with the EMS service in Spain, I also was able to take the basic EMS course during my internship; I even passed the course while some of my Spanish classmates weren’t as successful as I.
In addition to the EMT internship, I signed on to teach English to Spanish adults while in Spain. In many ways, I was able to do 2 internships during my time in Spain. A few other Americans (6 of us in total) participated in a variety of internships through Adelante while I was in Spain. I have stayed in close touch with Brian S. who also did the EMT internship. As Americans, we shared one common, unique experience back then – we were in Spain on September 11, 2001. Kimberly came to visit us not long after 9/11 to check on us while were there.
I have had many experiences since my internship with Adelante. I completed medical school at UNC-Chapel Hill, completed residency at the University of Michigan, and completed fellowship training in Chicago. I’m married, and my wife and I have a 1 year old little girl. I’m in private practice in NC as an allergy specialist. I’m also currently about half way through completion of an MBA degree through UNC-CH. (Of note, Brian S. completed dental school at College of Dental Medicine-Arizona and after a a few years in practice as a dentist has actually gone back to school to complete an MD degree at Chicago Medical School.)
The reason I’m sending this email is not actually to describe my accomplishments over the past 16 years. Rather, I thought I’d let you know that since my internship with Adelante, I have competed countless interviews in my career. And while I feel that my CV could take an interviewer in any number of directions, almost every interviewer has asked me, “I see you interned as an EMT in Spain; tell me about that.” For whatever reason, It has been a talking point that has saved me on so many levels throughout my career. Brian and I have talked about this over the years, and he has expressed the same experience in interviews.
Just wanted to say thanks!
Sincerely,
Colin F., MD
